Why is Huawei called “Harmony OS”? Yu Chengdong's explanation
Today, the Chinese industrial giant Huawei opened its annual developer conference. We think it’s no secret to anyone that Huawei acquired its own OS, which had several working names: HongMeng OS, Ark OS, Oak OS, etc. However, when the company officially announced the system, it was called "Harmony OS." Why none of the previously considered options has become the name of the OS, Huawei CEO Yu Chengdong explained.
"The Chinese meaning of HongMeng is close to the concept of" discovery of the earth. " The closest word in English is Genesis, which can be interpreted as “beginning”. But the Chinese word HongMeng is difficult to pronounce. We decided to name our system “Harmony” and we hope that it will bring more peace to the Earth, ”said Yu Chengdong.
What is good for Harmony OS?
Many senior Huawei officials have previously stated that the HongMeng system (from today – Harmony) is not designed for smartphones. However, at the conference devoted to her presentation, the head of Huawei Consumer Business Group Richard Yu noted that this system is designed for smartphones, smart speakers, computers, smart watches, wireless headphones, cars and tablets.
Harmony OS is the first microkernel-based operating system for all scenarios that supports memory sizes from kilobytes to gigabytes. Harmony OS is compatible with HTML5, Linux, and Android, but it will require recompilation.
Huawei CEO believes that HarmonyOS is a full-fledged alternative to Android. However, for now, the company will still continue to use Android. According to Yu, "if we have problems using Android in the future, we can immediately switch to HarmonyOS."
