Introduced by Kirin 990: the very first, powerful, fast, smart and puts the Snapdragon 855 on its shoulder blades
One of the main announcements of today and the entire IFA 2019 exhibition was the release of the 7-nanometer Kirin 990 mobile platform. The manufacturer itself positions the processor as “the industry’s first SoC 5G,” all because it received an integrated modem with support for fifth-generation networks.
The Chinese ignored the fact that a couple of days earlier Samsung introduced its chip with a built-in 5G modem. The Chinese gave themselves the title of “pioneer” for the simple reason that they should be the first to bring a smartphone with Kirin 990 5G to the market.
But the proprietary Balong 5G module received only the "older" version of the chip, while the basic variation is devoid of it. Balong 5G modem supports data transfer rates up to 1.25 Gbit / s and reception – up to 2.3 Gbit / s.
Huawei focuses on the increased performance and the capabilities that the chip received in terms of tasks tied to artificial intelligence.
New process technology and overclocked cores
As expected, the 7-nanometer process technology with EUV lithography was used to create the Kirin 990, and SoC has 10.3 billion transistors. And the platform has become more compact, which improves the efficiency of heat dissipation. The chip received eight processor cores, which are grouped into three clusters: 2 Cortex-A76 cores with a peak frequency of 2.86 GHz, a duet of Cortex-A76 cores with a frequency of 2.36 GHz and a quartet of energy-efficient Cortex-A55 cores clocked up to 1.95 GHz
The company claims that the Kirin 990 is 10% more powerful than the Snapdragon 855 in single-threaded tests and 9% in multi-threaded ones. We did not forget to declare superiority over the competitor in terms of energy efficiency – up to 35% (operation of energy-efficient cores) and up to 15% (high-performance). For some reason, the Chinese did not begin to share comparisons with the Snapdragon 855 Plus.
It surpasses the competitor Kirin 990 in terms of graphic performance by 6%. And all thanks to the installation of the Mali-G76 MP16 graphics accelerator, which also uses up to 20% less energy than the Adreno 640 in the Snapdragon 855. The company is confident that the video accelerator will cope with any tasks and heavy games without stress.
For “muscular” cores – a new principle of NPU
For the execution of operations sharpened by artificial intelligence, the NPU neuroprocessor unit is responsible, which includes three units. Two of them are designed to perform resource-intensive tasks, and one is focused on simple operations.
And again, the company declares that its new chip in terms of AI is “smarter” and faster than the Snapdragon 855 and Apple A12, and also more energy-efficient. But such an advanced NPU received only the 5G version of the Kirin 990, while the 4G version will offer a neural chip with one unit for heavy tasks and one for simple ones.
Kirin 4G is ready and it will definitely receive the flagships of the Huawei Mate 30 series, which will be announced on September 19. As for the 5G version of Kirin 990, it will debut later and, most likely, it will be one of the modifications of the Huawei Mate 30 Pro.
