A fingerprint scanner was hacked in 20 minutes using a glass fingerprint
The fingerprint scanner, retina and Face ID systems are the present of modern smartphones and they protect the privacy of user information. But none of the methods is 100% safe and hacking cases have been encountered more than once.
The guys from the X-Lab team at Tencent Security got to the ultrasound fingerprint sensor. At one of the hacking events in Shanghai, they clearly demonstrated how to trick a scanner. It took 20 minutes and no laborious manipulations had to be done.
The method is based on the principle of creating a copy of a papillary pattern. To begin with, volunteers were asked to touch a regular glass. Then the fingerprint was photographed, the photo was digitized through a special application.
A few minutes later, a “fingerprint” of a fingerprint was created, with the help of which it was possible to unlock three smartphones and two more devices that use a fingerprint sensor to identify the user.
One of the X-Lab employees said that they used equipment that cost only $ 140 to create a “clone” of the fingerprint. And you also need a smartphone and a special application.
The proposed method allows you to crack not only ultrasound scanners, but also capacitive and optical sensors. As a preventative measure against this hack, the guys from Tencent Security suggested users to avoid leaving their fingerprints on surfaces.
